Probabilistic hazard assessment: Application to geomagnetic activity

چکیده

Probabilistic Hazard Assessment (PHA) provides an appropriate methodology for assessing space weather hazards and their impact on technology. PHA is widely used in geosciences to determine the probability of exceedance critical thresholds, caused by one or more hazard sources. has proved useful with limited historical data estimate likelihood specific impacts. also driven development empirical physical models, ensembles replace measured data. Here we aim highlight method community provide example how it could be used. In terms impact, thresholds might include Geomagnetically Induced Current a high voltage power transformer neutral, local pipe-to-soil potential particular metal pipe. We illustrate context applying twelve-year dataset Earth-directed solar Coronal Mass Ejections (CME), which relate that global three-hourly geomagnetic activity index Kp exceeds thresholds. call this “Probabilistic Geomagnetic Assessment”, PGHA. This simple but concrete method. find cumulative > 6−, 7−, 8− = 9o 0.359, 0.227, 0.090, 0.011, respectively, following observation CME, summed over all CME launch speeds source locations. According distribution, represents order magnitude increase priori exceeding these For lower results are somewhat distorted our exclusion coronal hole high-speed stream effects. The PHGA reveals probabilistic associations between location subsequent maximum operational forecasters.

Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment of Tehran Based on Arias Intensity

A probabilistic seismic hazard assessment in terms of Arias intensity is presented for the city of Tehran. Tehran is the capital and the most populated city of Iran. From economical, political and social points of view, Tehran is the most significant city of Iran. Many destructive earthquakes happened in Iran in the last centuries. Historical references indicate that the old city of Rey and the...

Asteroid Impact Tsunami: A Probabilistic Hazard Assessment

We investigate the generation, propagation, and probabilistic hazard of tsunami spawned by oceanic asteroid impacts. The process first links the depth and diameter of parabolic impact cavities to asteroid density, radius, and impact velocity by means of elementary energy arguments and crater scaling rules. Then, linear tsunami theory illustrates how these transient cavities evolve into vertical...

Integration of probabilistic exposure assessment and probabilistic hazard characterization.

A method is proposed for integrated probabilistic risk assessment where exposure assessment and hazard characterization are both included in a probabilistic way. The aim is to specify the probability that a random individual from a defined (sub)population will have an exposure high enough to cause a particular health effect of a predefined magnitude, the critical effect size (CES). The exposure...

Scale effect in hazard assessment – application to daily rainfall

Daily precipitation is recorded as the total amount of water collected by a rain-gauge in 24 h. Events are modelled as a Poisson process and the 24 h precipitation by a Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD) of excesses. Hazard assessment is complete when estimates of the Poisson rate and the distribution parameters, together with a measure of their uncertainty, are obtained. The shape parameter...
