Probabilistic modeling of sustainable urban drainage systems

چکیده
Abstract Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) include strategies and solutions for distributed stormwater management control. They are strongly encouraged, especially in highly urbanized areas that suffer the combined effect of impervious surfaces increase extreme rainfall events due to urbanization growth climate change. Their integration into traditional urban drainage systems can mitigate flood risk pollution receiving water bodies. The main goal SUDS is restore natural balance by increasing infiltration evapotranspiration processes promoting rainwater harvesting reuse. This paper proposes an analytical-probabilistic approach modeling applicable different systems. Developed equations allow estimating runoff residual storage probability evaluating efficiency volume both terms control and, depending on type, emptying time or needs supply. considers possibility consecutive chained rainfalls; this feature relevant SUDS, often characterized low outflow rates. Relating characteristic parameters a probabilistic level (the Average Return Interval, ARI) makes formulas interesting be used design practice. An application two case studies confirmed goodness proposed method.

Contamination of Detained Sediment in Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems
Adsorption is a key water pollution remediation measure used to achieve stormwater quality improvement in Sustainable urban Drainage Systems (SuDS). The level of contamination of detained sediment within SuDS assets is not well documented, with published investigations limited to specific contaminant occurrence in ponds, wetlands or infiltration devices (bioretention cells) and generally focuse...

Urban water management has somewhat changed since the publication of The Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) Manual in 2007 [1], transforming from building traditional sewers to implementing SuDS, which are part of the best management practice techniques used in the USA and seen as contributing to water-sensitive urban design in Australia. Most SuDS, such as infiltration trenches, swales, green ...

متن کاملA Review of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems Considering the Climate Change and Urbanization Impacts
Climate change and urbanization are converging to challenge city drainage infrastructure due to their adverse impacts on precipitation extremes and the environment of urban areas. Sustainable drainage systems have gained growing public interest in recent years, as a result of its positive effects on water quality and quantity issues and additional recreational amenities perceived in the urban l...
متن کاملEvidence of traffic-related pollutant control in soil-based sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS).
SUDS are being increasingly employed to control highway runoff and have the potential to protect groundwater and surface water quality by minimising the risks of both point and diffuse sources of pollution. While these systems are effective at retaining polluted solids by filtration and sedimentation processes, less is known of the detail of pollutant behaviour within SUDS structures. This pape...
