QBO Phase Synchronization in CMIP6 Historical Simulations Attributed to Ozone Forcing

چکیده
Abstract Tropical stratospheric variability is investigated in ensembles of historical simulations performed by nine models for the sixth phase Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). Realizations from all feature a reasonable quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO). Variability zonal mean winds at equator found to be coherent among realizations when model prescribes CMIP6 ozone forcing. No such coherence simulates ozone. The results an ensemble QBO signal with amplitude, depending on model, 50%–80% amplitude single realization same model. due synchronization phases, attributed protocol including Coherence using is, therefore, artificial and individual these are not completely independent.

Attribution of historical ozone forcing to anthropogenic emissions
Anthropogenic ozone radiative forcing is traditionally separately attributed to tropospheric and stratospheric changes assuming that these have distinct causes1. Using the interactive composition–climate model GISS-E2-R we find that this assumption is not justified. Our simulations show that changes in emissions of tropospheric ozone precursors have substantial effects on ozone in both regions,...

متن کاملForcing oscillatory media: phase kinks vs. synchronization
We consider the effect of periodic external forcing on the spatiotemporal dynamics of one-dimensional oscillatory media modelled by the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation (CGLE). We determine the domain of existence and linear stability of the spatially homogeneous synchronous solution found at strong forcing. Some of the synchronization scenarios observed are described, and the “turbulent synchr...

The Aerosol Chemistry Model Intercomparison Project (AerChemMIP) is endorsed by the Coupled-Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6) and is designed to quantify the climate and air quality impacts of aerosols and chemically reactive gases. These are specifically near-term climate forcers (NTCFs: methane, tropospheric ozone and aerosols, and their precursors), nitrous oxide and ozonedepleting hal...
