چکیده

• Existing unreinforced masonry buildings show significant vulnerability to sequences of induced seismicity events. An intuitive seismic damage indexing scheme is proposed for URM structures. The considers both shear slipping and tensile cracking in masonry. A meso -scale model developed, the index equation applied identify evolution damage. could be applicable optical monitoring structural inspection. This paper aims quantify walls under seismicity. equation, which a function slippage opening mortar joints, as well drift ratio walls, was herein. Initially, dataset experimental tests from in-plane quasi-static cyclic on considered. experimentally obtained crack patterns were investigated their correlation with propagation studied. Using software based Distinct Element Method, numerical developed validated against full-scale literature. Wall panels representing common typologies house façades Northern Europe i.e. near Groningen gas field Netherlands, numerically investigated. accumulated within response by means representative harmonic load excitations an incremental dynamic analysis records region. ability this capture different situations demonstrated. methodology also accumulation during strong earthquakes aftershocks too.

Limit states of modern unreinforced clay brick masonry walls subjected to in-plane loading

Recent research showed that the in-plane horizontal displacement capacity of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls depends on numerous factors that are not yet captured by current empirical drift capacity models; e.g., axial stress, shear span, geometry of the walls and the material used. In order to improve the performance-based assessment of URM wall buildings, future research should aim at develo...

A Study of the Progressive Degradation of Masonry Shear Walls Subjected to Harmonic Loading

This masonry research investigated the differences in the static and dynamic stiffness for the seismic range of loads and frequencies for a pressed clay masonry wythe. The effective stiffness has been defined in Newtonian physics and Damage Mechanics. This research used the concept of measured stiffness defined as the measured stress field divided by the measured strain field. A two-part test r...

Resistance of Concrete Masonry Walls with Membrane Catcher Systems Subjected to Blast Loading

This paper describes a methodology for analyzing the impulse pressure response of unreinforced concrete masonry walls that have been retrofitted with membranes that are not bonded to the masonry (catcher systems). Membrane catcher systems can be used to protect building occupants from secondary debris resulting from blast pressure, and the effectiveness of systems comprising polymers, composite...

Homogenization of Interlocking Masonry Walls

In a previous publication the authors proposed a continuous model for describing the mechanical behaviour of ‘Running Bond’ masonry walls. Here a different masonry structure is considered. This structure is ‘bi-atomic’ in the sense that its pattern consists in two kind of blocks with different. The homogenization by differential expansions technique is used for obtaining an equivalent Cosserat ...

DEM Analysis of Backfilled Walls Subjected to Active Translation Mode

In this paper, the problem of a retaining wall under active translation mode is investigated numerically. To this end, a series of numerical models is conducted using the discrete element code, PFC2D. The backfill soil is simulated by an assembly of separate cohesionless circular particles. Backfill soil was prepared by pouring soil particles from a specific height under gravity force and givin...
