Quantitative cognition in carpenter ants

چکیده

Processing information about quantities allows animals to make optimal decisions during many natural contexts, such as foraging, territorial defense, offspring care, mate choice, and intra-sexual competition. Compared the wealth of available in vertebrates, much less is known invertebrates, even though processing equally relevant for both taxa. Here, we used two separate ecologically tasks (brood pile preference landmark-guided foraging) investigate dimensions quantitative cognition carpenter ants: spontaneous judgments trained use sequential landmarks. Individual ants spontaneously discriminated between piles dummy cocoons when choice involved smaller (1 vs. 2, 3, 4) larger numerical contrasts (2 4, 6, 8). Ants chemical visual/tactile cues their performance was dependent on ratio. In second task, preferentially searched near landmark (out five identical ones) despite alterations its position, suggesting that they ordinal location searching food. this experiment, showed a limit at four since drastically decreased were 5th landmark. We relative quantity position efficient decisions. Our study contributes scant body knowledge invertebrate species. There ample experimental evidence non-human are able process information, particular mammals, some birds, fish, ability useful variety situations. Yet, invertebrates very scarce. show individual items. Nurse brood different sizes foragers learn identify associated with food basis series ones. These results suggest might choices environment although precise mechanisms underlying should be further investigated.

Breeding system, colony structure, and genetic differentiation in the Camponotus festinatus species complex of carpenter ants.

All social insects live in highly organized societies. However, different social insect species display striking variation in social structure. This variation can significantly affect the genetic structure within populations and, consequently, the divergence between species. The purpose of this study was to determine if variation in social structure was associated with species diversification i...

Precocious quantitative cognition in monkeys.

Basic quantitative abilities are thought to have an innate basis in humans partly because the ability to discriminate quantities emerges early in child development. If humans and nonhuman primates share this developmentally primitive foundation of quantitative reasoning, then this ability should be present early in development across species and should emerge earlier in monkeys than in humans b...

Hidden Diversity Behind the Zombie-Ant Fungus Ophiocordyceps unilateralis: Four New Species Described from Carpenter Ants in Minas Gerais, Brazil

BACKGROUND Ophiocordyceps unilateralis (Clavicipitaceae: Hypocreales) is a fungal pathogen specific to ants of the tribe Camponotini (Formicinae: Formicidae) with a pantropical distribution. This so-called zombie or brain-manipulating fungus alters the behaviour of the ant host, causing it to die in an exposed position, typically clinging onto and biting into the adaxial surface of shrub leaves...

The carpenter syndrome phenotype.

Carpenter syndrome (Acrocephalopolysyndactyly type II), first described in 1901, consists of acrocephaly, syndactyly, polydactyly, congenital heart disease, mental retardation, hypogenitalism, cryptorchidism, obesity, umbilical hernia and bony abnormalities. We report a 6 years old boy presenting as a union of these malformations and also having bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Auditory di...
