Radiocarbon Data Reveal Contrasting Sources for Carbon Fractions in Thermokarst Lakes and Rivers of Eastern Canada (Nunavik, Quebec)

چکیده
Greenhouse gas emissions from permafrost organic carbon decomposition in lakes and rivers can accelerate global warming. We used radiocarbon (14C) measurements to determine the predominant sources of dissolved (DOC), particulate (POC), inorganic (DIC), methane (CH4) five thermokarst three an area widespread degradation Northern Quebec assess contributions thawing other old (fixed before CE 1950) reservoirs. compared emission pathways (dissolved ebullition), seasons (summer winter), surface soil type (mineral peat soils). Modern after was dominant source DOC, DIC, CH4 non-peatland aquatic systems, while POC sediment were predominantly fixed last millennia. In peatland modern important lake ebullition CO2, CH4. contrast, POC, CH4, river DIC dominated by millennial-old carbon. winter, 14C age increased, but did not change. Our results point a clearly older overall for relative lakes. The younger ages DOC all suggest that recent primary productivity strongly influences large total CO2 this area, as diffusion fluxes greatly exceed fluxes.

OBJECTIVES Pneumococcal infections constitute an important public health problem in Nordic regions of Canada. Nordic populations are not included in national and provincial immunization surveys and there is no centralized immunization registry in these regions. The objective of this study was to estimate pneumococcal vaccination coverage and delays in immunization of children in Nunavik, Quebec...
متن کاملDistribution of Clostridium botulinum type E strains in Nunavik, Northern Quebec, Canada.
The distribution and levels of Clostridium botulinum type E were determined from field sites used by Inuit hunters for butchering seals along the coast of Nunavik. The incidence rates of C. botulinum type E in shoreline soil along the coast were 0, 50, and 87.5% among samples tested for the Hudson Strait, Hudson Bay, and Ungava Bay regions, respectively. Spores were detected in seawater or coas...

Systematic aerial line-transect surveys of beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas, were conducted in James Bay, eastern Hudson Bay, and Ungava Bay from 14 August to 3 September 2001. An estimated 7901 (SE = 1744) and 1155 (SE = 507) belugas were present at the surface in the offshore areas of James Bay and Hudson Bay, respectively. An additional 39 animals were observed in estuaries during the co...
متن کاملFactors associated with cervical cancer screening uptake among Inuit women in Nunavik, Quebec, Canada
BACKGROUND The Canadian circumpolar Inuit population has a higher incidence rate of cervical cancer than the general population and the majority of cases occur among underscreened women. The objectives of this study were to determine Pap smear utilization rates and to determine factors associated with time-inappropriate use of cervical cancer screening among a cohort of Inuit women from Nunavik...
