Carbon, owing to its unique properties such as surface area, pore features, conductivity, and chemical thermal stability, has found several applications in the field of sensors, energy storage, electrocatalysis, hydrogen storage. However, pristine carbon are sometimes insufficient meet requirements a particular application. Heteroatom co-doping may not only enhance improve porosity, redox activity, but it also increases stability. B, N heteroatom gained popularity is be an effective way porous by influencing physicochemical, electrochemical, electrical properties, thereby widening applications. In this review, rational synthetic strategies that used produce co-doped described. Further, charge conduction carbon-based materials (including metal metal-free) discussed detail. Certain remarkable works representing various area storage (rechargeable batteries supercapacitors), sensors highlighted. Finally, review ends with discussion existing challenges possible future directions research on carbon.
