Recent Advances in Multiple Strategies for the Synthesis of Terpenes by Engineered Yeast

Terpenes are an important class of natural secondary metabolites with a wide range applications in food, pharmaceuticals, and biofuels. Currently, the traditional production methods terpenes almost depend on plant extraction chemical conversion. The method consumes lot resources makes it difficult to separate target compound from extractives, while conversion has complex synthesis route leads severe environmental pollution. Compared methods, microbial advantages preferable sustainability, low cost friendliness, is potential way achieve efficient future. Yeast conventional platform for bio-chemical also engineered synthesize due their abundant intracellular acetyl-CoA, high metabolic flux MVA pathway, local concentrations substrates enzymes, fewer by-products. At present, variety including ?-farnesene, squalene, limonene, ?-carotene have been successfully synthesized by yeast via application multiple strategies. This work summarized progress research these strategies conducted several aspects, adaptive screening expression terpene synthases, regulation pathways, compartmentalized strategy. perspectives challenges were discussed, which was hoped that some useful views future would be provided.
