Recognizing service users’ diversity: social identity narratives of British Pakistanis in a mental health context

Purpose This study aims to investigate how British Pakistani people talk about their social identity, in the context of mental health, and this shapes experiences perceptions care delivered by National Health Service, UK. Design/methodology/approach Eight narrative interviews were conducted among members community living a city The data analyzed using analysis approach “social identity” as theoretical lens. Findings Considering service users single entity, responding with generic approaches meeting health needs, may not be helpful achieving equitable treatment. Study participants reject simple conceptualization race ethnicity response based upon stereotypes is woefully inadequate. revealed that from one ethnic or national background cannot assumed have fixed identity. Originality/value broadens understanding construct view identities markedly different others same group. has implications for providers clients’ identity treated understood practice.
