چکیده

Abstract We present a regional photometric analysis of asteroid (101955) Bennu, using image data from the MapCam color imager OSIRIS-REx Camera Suite (OCAMS). This follows previously reported global which found that Bennu’s roughness was difficult to photometrically model owing unresolved surface variation. Here we find that, even with high-resolution shape (20 cm per facet) and automatic registration (<1 pixel error), Bennu remains challenging model: neither suite empirical models nor physically motivated Hapke were able eliminate scatter in due pixel-scale variations. Nonetheless, improved on by identifying variations response. A linear model, when compared independent measures albedo, revealed correlations between those characteristics phase slope. showed same structure its single-scattering albedo asymmetry factors; although parameters loosely constrained, complicating interpretation their spatial variation, variation relative parameter sensitivity also correlated shallower slope, higher less macroscopic roughness.

Surface thermophysical properties determination of OSIRIS-REx target asteroid (101955) Bennu

In this work, we investigate the thermophysical properties of OSIRIS-REx target asteroid (101955) Bennu (hereafter Bennu), where thermal inertia plays an important role in understanding the nature of the asteroid’s surface, and will definitely provide substantial information for the sampling return mission. Using a thermophysical model incorporating, the recently updated 3D radar-derived shape ...

Shape model and surface properties of the OSIRIS-REx target Asteroid (101955) Bennu from radar and lightcurve observations

We determine the three-dimensional shape of near-Earth Asteroid (101955) Bennu based on radar images and optical lightcurves. Bennu was observed both in 1999 at its discovery apparition, and in 2005 using the 12.6-cm radar at the Arecibo Observatory and the 3.5-cm radar at the Goldstone tracking station. Data obtained in both apparitions were used to construct a shape model of this object. Obse...

Photometric observations of Rosetta target asteroid 2867 Steins

Asteroid 2867 Steins is one of two flyby targets of ESA’s International Rosetta Mission, launched in March, 2004. We obtained CCD observations of Steins on April 1416, 2004 at Table Mountain Observatory, California, in order to characterize the asteroid physically, information that is crucial for planning the Steins flyby. This study includes the first detailed analysis of the physical properti...

The geophysical environment of Bennu

An analysis of the surface and interior state of Asteroid (101955) Bennu, the target asteroid of the OSIRISREx sample return mission, is given using models based on Earth-based observations of this body. These observations have enabled models of its shape, spin state, mass and surface properties to be developed. Based on these data the range of surface and interior states possible for this body...

A collision avoidance strategy for a potential natural satellite around the asteroid Bennu for the OSIRIS-REx mission

The cadence of proximity operations for the OSIRIS-REx mission may have an extra induced challenge given the potential of the detection of a natural satellite orbiting the asteroid Bennu. Current ground radar observations for object detection orbiting Bennu show no found objects within bounds of specific size and rotation rates. If a natural satellite is detected during approach, a different pr...
