چکیده
Structural change of cities has long been a central theme in urban studies. Recent manifestations have described either as instances ‘adaptation’, often associated with flexible adjustment and reorganisation, or ‘transformation’, implying deeper more radical scope change. The conceptual difference between these two ideas, however, remains surprisingly under-theorised ambiguous the extant literature. We find both notions casually (and at times even interchangeably) employed recent debates on ‘resilient cities’. Addressing this imprecision, our commentary focuses structure–identity relationship, coupling resilience thinking an institutional perspective that provided intellectual moorings for scholarly approaches to city identity. Through prism, identity is firmly conceptualised distinctive set socio-political values; structure city, then, provides means realise values. In consequence, we are able offer precise differentiation what here dub ‘adaptive resilience’ ‘transformative change’ facets contexts: if structural accompanied by shift values thus identity), refer transformative; no such takes place, instance adaptive change, primarily level structures. illustrate argument empirical case Vienna. Overall, commentary’s ambition add nuance, clarity precision currently raging field
