Residents’ perception of tourism: a systematic review from 1978 to 2019

Residents are crucial stakeholders in tourism development and their perceptions towards this activity have been studied since the 1970s. Since then, studies area expanded considerably, including review papers. The purpose of paper is to evaluate evolution explore critically methodologies applied about residents´ between 1978 2019 published ten most impactful journals according Scimago Journal Ranking (2018). In a total 260 papers, main results showed that Tourism Management was journal with largest number papers published. Most were quantitative nature atheoretical.
