Resistive and capacitive technology recipes for peak cooling load reductions in the global south

Buildings in the Global South are expected to drive a tripling of global cooling energy demand by 2050. In countries such as India, growth use far outstrips population, often ratio 3:1. While several building-level technologies exist that could help reduce peak and total demand, technologies, or combination would offer greatest reduction range climates is unknown previous work has focused on mid latitudes. Hence, we computer simulations study, for first time, six different cooling-driven peak-shaving covering 19 South. Using Latin Hypercube Sampling account uncertainties arising from building variants technology performance, conduct 266,000 annual hourly simulations. thermally activated systems phase change materials deliver largest reductions water storage most consistent reducing peak, yet had possible increase demand. We also develop combinations, “recipes”, which suggest attainable between 19% - 95% 20%–99% respectively, depending climate. Given scale potential reduction, our results justify investment governments others major load South, but if incorrectly designed, it clear they may result reduced security increased carbon emissions.
