Response of testate amoeba assemblages to peatland drain blocking

چکیده

Abstract Peatlands represent globally important habitats and carbon stores. However, human impacts climate change leave peatlands with a substantial management challenge. Degradation of peatland their hydrological integrity is increasingly counteracted through the rehabilitation including re-wetting drain blocking. Research into how such interventions affect microbial assemblages limited. Here, we investigate response testate amoebae (established unicellular amoeboid protist indicators conditions in peatlands) to blocking on three small lowland raised bogs Northern Ireland, UK. We sampled Sphagnum adjacent areas focused flow near sites damming addition control away from dam These restoration measures show complex but meaningful results after restoration. observe several key developments following blocking: (i) species diversity increases; (ii) unambiguous wet indicator taxa appear increasing abundance at dammed sites; (iii) transfer-function reconstructed water-table depths wetter sites. findings imply restoration, where routine monitoring presented no clear trend depths. found statistically significant assemblage-level experimental or environmental variables, which may be related antecedent periods drought during study period. Thus, caution advised when utilising for bioindication until better understood. Nevertheless, this emphasises potential an indicator-taxa based approach applying as contemporary bioindicators restoration—particularly short-term timescales immediately

Testate amoebae as paleoindicators of surface-moisture changes on Michigan peatlands: modern ecology and hydrological calibration

Peatland testate amoebae are sensitive indicators of local hydrology and have been used as proxies for surface moisture conditions in fossil studies. However, few regional calibration datasets exist in North America, and knowledge of testate amoeba ecology and distribution patterns are limited. The objectives of this study were to (1) investigate the relationship between testate amoebae, enviro...

Drain blocking: an effective treatment for reducing dissolved organic carbon loss and water discolouration in a drained peatland.

Peatlands are an important terrestrial carbon store. However, heightened levels of degradation in response to environmental change have resulted in an increased loss of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and an associated rise in the level of discolouration in catchment waters. A significant threat to peatland sustainability has been the installation of artificial drainage ditches. However, recent ...

Potential implications of differential preservation of testate amoebae shells for paleoenvironmental reconstruction in peatland

Running title: testate amoebae taphonomy and paleoecology 2 Abstract Testate amoebae are now commonly used in paleoenvironmental studies but little is known of their taphonomy. There is some experimental evidence for differential preservation of some testate amoeba shell types over others, but it is unclear what, if any impact this has on palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. To investigate this ...

Comparative ecology of vascular plant, bryophyte and testate amoeba communities in four Sphagnum peatlands along an altitudinal gradient in Switzerland

Monitoring tools are needed to assess changes in peatlandbiotic communities and ecosystem functions in response to on-going climate and other environmental changes. Although the responses of soil organisms and plants to ecological gradients and perturbations do not always correlate, peatland monitoring is mainly based on vegetation surveys. Testate amoebae, a group of protists, are important co...

Toward the use of testate amoeba functional traits as indicator of floodplain restoration success

Functional traits (FT) offer a new framework to understand the ecology of organisms and overcome taxonomic difficulties that currently limit the study of minute soil taxa. FT are likely to be selected by environmental filters and hence they may provide more direct information on ecosystem characteristics than the species composition of a community. We tested the potential of testate amoeba (TA)...
