Retrofit at scale: accelerating capabilities for domestic building stocks

Highlights Retrofitting domestic buildings is essential for meeting targets to mitigate the catastrophic impacts of our changing climate. Current rates retrofitting are far lower than necessary achieving global net zero climate targets. To date in privately owned homes, policymakers have largely relied on piecemeal activity and often short-lived programmes financial incentives. Consequently, this special issue explores what capabilities capacities needed deliver retrofit at scale. Looking across different scales—national, municipal, neighbourhood individual sites—this provides insights shape policies, organisational structures delivery strategies scales, building types supply chain actors. These papers highlight need a clearer definition incorporates, alongside collection high-quality data rigorous metrics. In addition, diverse business models ensure that variety actors public private sectors well positioned engage coordinating Finally, it any acceleration coupled with consumer protection mechanisms support developing chains which incorporates both existing workers encouragement new entrants. It only through multifaceted approach can be delivered speed scale necessary.
