Revealed Preferences of Fourth Graders When Requesting Face-to-Face Help While Doing Math Exercises Online

When in doubt, asking a peer can be very helpful. Students learn lot of social strategies from peers. However, stated preference studies have found that for elementary school students with math questions, they prefer to ask their teacher help. In this paper, we study revealed preferences instead preferences. We analyzed the behavior fourth-grade seeking face-to-face assistance while working on an online platform. started by independently platform, before selected two or three tutors among those who answered 10 questions correctly. Each student was then able choose between one these when requesting assistance. studied students’ over 3 years, involving 88 classes, 2700 students, 1209 sessions classmate tutors, and total 16,485 requests help there option classmate. classmates times more than teachers given choice. Furthermore, gap increases first second semester. also request same sex higher academic performance. context, highest tertiles sought tertiles, medium tertile seek tertile. lowest do not top own tertiles.
