Review of Recent Drilling Projects in Unconventional Geothermal Resources at Campi Flegrei Caldera, Cornubian Batholith, and Williston Sedimentary Basin

چکیده

Unconventional geothermal resource development can contribute to increase power generation from renewable energy sources in countries without conventional hydrothermal reservoirs, which are usually associated with magmatic activity and extensional faulting, as well expand the those regions where resources already used. Three recent drilling experiences focused on characterization of unconventional described compared: Campi Flegrei Deep Drilling Project (CFDDP) Italy, United Downs Geothermal Power (UDDGP) project Kingdom, DEEP Earth Energy Production Canada. The main aspects each (geology, drilling, data collection, communication strategies) compared discuss challenges encountered at tree sites considered, including a scientific two industrial ones (UDDGP DEEP). first project, stage pilot hole, although not reaching deep supercritical targets, showed extremely high, very rare thermal gradients even shallow depths. Although has its own history, social economic context, lessons learned site be used further facilitate development.

Progressive approach to eruption at Campi Flegrei caldera in southern Italy

Unrest at large calderas rarely ends in eruption, encouraging vulnerable communities to perceive emergency warnings of volcanic activity as false alarms. A classic example is the Campi Flegrei caldera in southern Italy, where three episodes of major uplift since 1950 have raised its central district by about 3 m without an eruption. Individual episodes have conventionally been treated as indepe...

Magma transfer at Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy) before the 1538 AD eruption

Calderas are collapse structures related to the emptying of magmatic reservoirs, often associated with large eruptions from long-lived magmatic systems. Understanding how magma is transferred from a magma reservoir to the surface before eruptions is a major challenge. Here we exploit the historical, archaeological and geological record of Campi Flegrei caldera to estimate the surface deformatio...

Hazard assessment during caldera unrest at the Campi Flegrei, Italy: a contribution from gravity–height gradients

Hazard assessment and risk mitigation at restless calderas is only possible with adequate geophysical monitoring. We show here how detailed long-term microgravity and deformation surveys may contribute to hazard assessment at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) in Italy by evaluating gravity–height change (∆g/∆h) gradients obtained during ground inflation and deflation between 1981 and 2001. Such g...

Modeling surface deformation observed with synthetic aperture radar interferometry at Campi Flegrei caldera

Satellite radar interferometry of Campi Flegrei caldera, Italy, reveals a pattern of subsidence during the period !993-!998. !nterferograms panning the first half of the observation period (1993-1995) have a lower amplitude and average rate of subsidence than those spanning either the second half (1995-1998) or the entire period (1993-1998), consistent with observations of a slowing down or rev...

Rapid differentiation in a sill-like magma reservoir: a case study from the campi flegrei caldera

In recent decades, geophysical investigations have detected wide magma reservoirs beneath quiescent calderas. However, the discovery of partially melted horizons inside the crust is not sufficient to put constraints on capability of reservoirs to supply cataclysmic eruptions, which strictly depends on the chemical-physical properties of magmas (composition, viscosity, gas content etc.), and thu...
