Reworking Geometric Morphometrics into a Methodology of Transformation Grids

چکیده

Abstract Today’s typical application of geometric morphometrics to a quantitative comparison organismal anatomies begins by standardizing samples homologously labelled point configurations for location, orientation, and scale, then renders the ensuing comparisons graphically thin-plate spline as applied group averages, principal components, regression predictions, or canonical variates. The scale-standardization step has recently come under criticism unnecessary indeed inappropriate, at least growth studies. This essay argues similar rethinking centering rotation, replacement interpolant resulting different strategy that leaves unexplained residuals every landmark individually in order simplify interpretation displayed grid whole, “transformation grid” been highlighted true underlying topic ever since D’Arcy Thompson’s celebrated exposition 1917. For analyses involving gradients large this paper all three Procrustes conventions version my two-point registration 1986 [originally Galton’s 1907 (Nature 76:617–618, 1907)]. choice two points interacts with another non-Procrustes concern, interpretability lines coordinate system deformed according fitted polynomial trend rather than an interpolating spline. works examples using previously published midsagittal cranial data; there result new findings pertinent both these classic data sets. A concluding discussion suggests current toolkit morphometrics, centered on shape coordinates splines, is too restricted suit many interpretive purposes evolutionary developmental biology.

Geometric Morphometrics

The field of morphometrics is developing quickly and recent advances allow for geometric techniques to be applied easily to many zoological problems. This article briefly introduces geometric morphometric techniques and then reviews selected areas where those techniques have been applied to questions of general interest. This article is relevant to non-specialists looking for an entry into geom...

The promise of geometric morphometrics.

Nontraditional or geometric morphometric methods have found wide application in the biological sciences, especially in anthropology, a field with a strong history of measurement of biological form. Controversy has arisen over which method is the "best" for quantifying the morphological difference between forms and for making proper statistical statements about the detected differences. This pap...

Geometric morphometrics and phylogeny

This paper reviews some of the important properties of geometric morphometric shape variables and discusses the advantages and limitations of the use of such data in studies of phylogeny. A method for fitting morphometric data to a phylogeny (i.e., estimating ancestral states of the shape variables) is presented using the squared-change parsimony criterion for estimation. These results are then...

Geometric morphometrics simplified

Although the theory andmethods of the relatively new field of geometric morphometrics are becoming well developed (for an overview, see [1]), it has not yet been applied as widely as it could be, owing to the lack of easily accessible introductory guides. This primer, by Miriam Zelditch and colleagues, should make the field more accessible because the new methods described here are relatively s...
