Right-handedness: a consequence of infant supine head-orientation preference?

Most newborn infants (65 percent) preferred to lie with their heads turned to the right, whereas 15 percent showed a distinct preference for the left. Orientation preference is maintained for at least 2 months and predicts preferential hand use in reaching tasks at both 16 and 22 weeks. Right head-orientation preference in early infancy may contribute to the early development of right-handedness.

Attentional asymmetries – cause or consequence of human right handedness?

It is well established that the vast majority of the population favors their right hand when performing complex manual tasks. However, the developmental and evolutionary underpinnings of human manual asymmetries remain contentious. One often overlooked suggestion is that right handedness may stem from an asymmetrical bias in attention, with the right hand being allocated more attentional resour...

Head Orientation position during birth and in infant neonatal period, and hand preference at nineteen weeks.

This study of lateral preferences of normal full-term infants found, as predicted, that infants who were delivered from a left occiput anterior or transverse birth position (head turned to the right) exhibited a neonatal right supine head orientation and a right-hand preference in visually guided reaching tasks at 19 weeks. Contrary to prediction, infants delivered from a right occiput anterior...

Head orientation and handedness trajectory in rhesus monkey infants (Macaca mulatta).

In human and chimpanzee infants, neonatal rightward supine head orientation bias predicts later right hand use preference. In an evolutionarily older primate species such as the rhesus monkey, a left hand preference has been reported, but there are no data on head orientation biases. Supine head orientation bias was measured experimentally in 16 rhesus monkey neonates and compared with prone he...

Intrathoracic Displacement of Fractured Right Humeral Head: A Case Report

Intrathoracic displacement of the humeral head is a very uncommon condition and can be life threatening due to lungor heart injuries. There is a report of this condition where intrathoracic bone fragment was missed. Because of rareincidence there is no guideline for approach and treatment of this condition. We hereby present a case of intrathoracic displacement of fractured hum...
