Rocket drops: The self-propulsion of supercooled freezing drops

نویسندگان

چکیده

Supercooled water drops move spontaneously while freezing in vacuum. This self-propulsion phenomenon is caused by an enhanced evaporation rate from the frozen regions of drops. The evaporating molecules carry momentum, and acquire opposite same as rocket propulsion.

Immersion freezing of supercooled water drops containing glassy volcanic ash particles

The freezing temperatures of hundreds of water drops with radii 20–50 lm containing known average concentrations of suspended, mostly micronto submicron-sized, volcanic ash particles composed of SiO2-rich glass were recorded using optical microscopy. As expected, the ash suppresses supercooling, and in contrast to earlier studies of much larger ash particles, the median freezing temperature cle...

"Self-Shaping" of Multicomponent Drops.

In our recent study we showed that single-component emulsion drops, stabilized by proper surfactants, can spontaneously break symmetry and transform into various polygonal shapes during cooling [ Denkov Nature 2015 , 528 , 392 - 395 ]. This process involves the formation of a plastic rotator phase of self-assembled oil molecules beneath the drop surface. The plastic phase spontaneously forms a ...

Soft Listeria: actin-based propulsion of liquid drops.

We study the motion of oil drops propelled by actin polymerization in cell extracts. Drops deform and acquire a pearlike shape under the action of the elastic stresses exerted by the actin comet, a tail of cross-linked actin filaments. We solve this free boundary problem and calculate the drop shape taking into account the elasticity of the actin gel and the variation of the polymerization velo...

Universality of tip singularity formation in freezing water drops.

A drop of water deposited on a cold plate freezes into an ice drop with a pointy tip. While this phenomenon clearly finds its origin in the expansion of water upon freezing, a quantitative description of the tip singularity has remained elusive. Here we demonstrate how the geometry of the freezing front, determined by heat transfer considerations, is crucial for the tip formation. We perform sy...

Collision between chemically driven self - propelled drops

We use analytical and numerical approaches to investigate head-on collisions between two self-propelled drops described as a phase separated binary mixture. Each drop is driven by chemical reactions that isotropically produce or consume the concentration of a third chemical component, which affects the surface tension of the drop. The isotropic distribution of the concentration field is destabi...
