RV-detected planets around M dwarfs: Challenges for core accretion models

چکیده

Planet formation is sensitive to the conditions in protoplanetary disks, for which scaling laws as a function of stellar mass are known. We aim test whether observed population planets around low-mass stars can be explained by these trends, or if separate channels needed. address this question confronting state-of-the-art planet synthesis model with sample M dwarfs HARPS and CARMENES radial velocity (RV) surveys. To account detection biases, we performed injection retrieval experiments on actual RV data produce synthetic observations that simulated following core accretion paradigm. These simulations robustly yield previously reported high occurrence rocky generally agree their planetary function. In contrast, our cannot reproduce giant less massive than 0.5 solar masses. This potentially indicates an alternative channel least current theories. further find dependency rate short-period planets. A lack close-in earlier-type ($M_\star \gtrsim 0.4\, M_\odot$) remains unexplained dissimilar migration barriers disks different spectral subtypes. Both discrepancies attributed gaps understanding nascent dwarf systems. They underline young subtypes, importance taking differences into when studying formation.

Planets Around M-dwarfs – Astrometric Detection and Orbit Characterization

There are compelling reasons to search for planets around late M-dwarfs: current planet surveys have not been able to target these optically-faint stars, and the reduced primary stellar mass improves planet detection sensitivity for new techniques which can target these stars. In this white paper we argue that one can employ aging 2 m telescopes for dedicated astrometric programs in the spirit ...

Disks and Planets around Massive White Dwarfs

We predict the existence of dusty disks and possibly CO planets around massive white dwarfs. We show that the thermal emission from these disks should be detectable in the infrared. The planets may also be detectable either by direct IR imaging, spectroscopy, or using the pulsations of the white dwarfs. Subject headings: white dwarfs—stars: planetary systems—accretion disks

Imaging planets around nearby white dwarfs

We suggest that Jovian planets will survive the late stages of stellar evolution, and that white dwarfs will retain planetary systems in wide orbits (∼ 5 AU). Utilising evolutionary models for Jovian planets, we show that infra-red imaging with 8m class telescopes of suitable nearby white dwarfs should allow us to resolve and detect companions ∼ 3MJUP. Detection of massive planetary companions ...

Core-Accretion Model Predicts Few Jovian-Mass Planets Orbiting Red Dwarfs

The favored theoretical explanation for giant planet formation – in both our solar system and others – is the core accretion model (although it still has some serious difficulties). In this scenario, planetesimals accumulate to build up planetary cores, which then accrete nebular gas. With current opacity estimates for protoplanetary envelopes, this model predicts the formation of Jupiter-mass ...

Pan-Planets: Searching for hot Jupiters around cool dwarfs

The Pan-Planets survey observed an area of 42 sq deg. in the galactic disk for about 165 hours. The main scientific goal of the project is the detection of transiting planets around M dwarfs. We establish an efficient procedure for determining the stellar parameters Teff and log g of all sources using a method based on SED fitting, utilizing a three-dimensional dust map and proper motion inform...
