Motor imagery muscle contraction strength influences spinal motor neuron excitability and cardiac sympathetic nerve activity
[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in spinal motor neuron excitability and autonomic nervous system activity during motor imagery of isometric thenar muscle activity at 10% and 50% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). [Methods] The F-waves and low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio were recorded at rest, during motor imagery, and post-trial. For motor imagery tri...

F-waves, one of the late responses produced by antidromic activation of Motoneurons by supramaximal stimulation, are one of the most frequently used studies in clinical neurophysiology. They are particularly useful for the diagnosis of proximal nerve lesions and have been found of use in diagnosis of certain types of peripheral neuropathy such as Guillian Barre Syndrome GBS, when other nerve co...
متن کاملExcitability of spinal motor neurons during motor imagery of thenar muscle activity under maximal voluntary contractions of 50% and 100%
[Purpose] We often perform physical therapy using motor imagery of muscle contraction to improve motor function for healthy subjects and central nerve disorders. This study aimed to determine the differences in the excitability of spinal motor neurons during motor imagery of a muscle contraction at different contraction strengths. [Subjects] We recorded the F-wave in 15 healthy subjects. [Metho...
متن کاملExcitability of Spinal Motor Neuron Function after the Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation (TES) in Healthy Subjects -F-wave Study.
To clarify the excitability of spinal motor neuron function after transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES), we investigated the F-wave before and after TES. Fourteen healthy volunteers with a mean age of 23.4 years were studied. TES was applied to the flexor hallucis brevis (FHB) for 15 minutes. F-wave and M-wave were recorded from the FHB after tibial nerve stimulation at the ankle before T...
متن کاملF wave size as a monitor of motor neuron excitability: the effect of deafferentation.
F waves have been recorded from hand or leg muscles following surgical section or traumatic avulsion of dorsal roots. It has been found that under these conditions F wave size can still be changed by manoeuvres which influence motor neuron excitability but that the size and direction of the changes are variable and may be dependent on the resting level of that excitability.
