Science Requirements and Detector Concepts for the Electron-Ion Collider

This report describes the physics case, resulting detector requirements, and evolving concepts for experimental program at Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in United States with capability to collide high-energy electron beams proton ion beams, providing access those regions nucleon nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized give unprecedented spatial spin of proton, neutron, light ions. studies leading this document were commissioned organized User Group objective advancing state detail developing that meet emerging requirements preparation realization EIC. effort aims provide basis further development equipment best suited science needs, including importance two complementary detectors interaction regions. consists three volumes. Volume I an executive summary our findings developed concepts. In II we describe wide range measurements on acceptance performance. III discusses general-purpose underlying technologies requirements. These considerations form world-class increase understanding fundamental all visible matter.
