Seed dispersal by waterbirds: a mechanistic understanding by simulating avian digestion

چکیده

Waterbirds disperse plant species via ingestion and egestion of seeds (endozoochory). However, our understanding about the regulating effects seed traits, underlying mechanisms possible (co)evolutionary processes is limited by traditional reliance on data from feeding experiments with living waterbirds. Here, we overcome these limitations developing applying a new bioassay that realistically simulates digestive for Anseriformes We test three hypotheses: 1) survival germination are most affected mechanical digestion in waterbird gizzard; 2) size, hardness, imbibition shape regulate survival; 3) plants growing aquatic habitats benefit endozoochory Experiments 28 200 48 demonstrated species-specific was entirely determined avian gizzard. Intestinal did not affect but establishment (germinability time) 21% species. Large, hard survived simulations best, contrast to generally higher smaller during vivo experiments. This mechanistically explains small escape rather than being inherently more resistant (the ‘escape mechanism'), while large retained until fully digested or regurgitated ‘resistance regurgitation mechanism'). Plants wetter had similar survival, stimulated their germinability accelerated terrestrial plants. indicates relative advantage wet habitats, possibly reflecting co-evolutionary response related dormancy breaking gut passage. Simulating passage using allowed establishing identifying relevant traits involved dispersal information enhances how animal distributions, which extremely now current anthropogenic pressures already severely impact capacities.

Mechanistic analytical models for long-distance seed dispersal by wind.

We introduce an analytical model, the Wald analytical long-distance dispersal (WALD) model, for estimating dispersal kernels of wind-dispersed seeds and their escape probability from the canopy. The model is based on simplifications to well-established three-dimensional Lagrangian stochastic approaches for turbulent scalar transport resulting in a two-parameter Wald (or inverse Gaussian) distri...

Selection by a predispersal seed predator constrains the evolution of avian seed dispersal in pines

1. Previous studies have demonstrated that wind dispersal is an effective mode of seed dispersal for pines ( Pinus , Pinaceae) with seeds weighing <90 mg, but not for largerseeded ( ≥ 90 mg) pines. Consequently, most large-seeded pines rely on birds in the family Corvidae for seed dispersal, but some do not, and most of their seeds fall near the parent tree. Why seeds of these pines are not dis...

Seed dispersal by neotropical seed predators.

From a plant's perspective, the difference between a seed predator and a seed disperser should be straightforward: attract animals that will disperse seeds and defend seeds from potential predators. Unlike pulp-eating frugivores, seed predators regularly encounter diverse plant protective mechanisms. The purpose of this paper is to examine feeding constraints, morphological adaptations, and the...

Overseas seed dispersal by migratory birds.

Long-distance dispersal (LDD) promotes the colonization of isolated and remote habitats, and thus it has been proposed as a mechanism for explaining the distributions of many species. Birds are key LDD vectors for many sessile organisms such as plants, yet LDD beyond local and regional scales has never been directly observed nor quantified. By sampling birds caught while in migratory flight by ...

Fruit size in wild olives: implications for avian seed dispersal

Frugivorous birds in the Mediterranean basin may disperse seeds using two different feeding behaviours: swallowing the fruit whole or pecking pieces of pulp. Swallowing is the common behaviour of frugivorous seed dispersers in the Mediterranean basin (Herrera 1984a) and most of the fleshy-fruited plants in the region rely on this bird feeding behaviour to disperse their seeds (Herrera 1984b, 19...
