Seismic vulnerability assessment and fragility analysis of pre-code masonry buildings in Portugal

Despite the fact that in recent years Portugal has not seen occurrence of high-magnitude earthquakes, it remains threatened by these events due to its geographic location. Since 1960s, reinforced concrete been most used material for new constructions; however, historic urban centers are dominated old unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings, which techniques and construction materials have evolved since Great Lisbon earthquake occurred 1755 (Mw = 8.5). Given presence buildings areas significant seismicity, extensive research is needed assess seismic risk define mitigation policies. This kind studies often supported empirical methods based on expert judgment high variability building stock lack information.
