Seismogenic and tremorgenic slow slip near the stability transition of frictional sliding

چکیده

Slow-slip events and tremors occur below the seismogenic zone of major plate boundaries. While physics aseismic slow-slip is relatively well understood, mechanics slow slip remains elusive because conditions leading to or fast ruptures are thought be mutually exclusive. Here, we explore fault dynamics in parametric space frictional show that natural behavior homogeneous faults, as long velocity dependence approaches neutral with a small characteristic nucleation size. Tremors can originate from rapid bursts earthquakes triggered rupture spreads over small-scale asperities. The near velocity-neutral explain underlying collocated commonly found zone. presence material heterogeneity may spatio-temporal clustering migration features tremor activity.

Slow slip and the transition from fast to slow fronts in the rupture of frictional interfaces.

The failure of the population of microjunctions forming the frictional interface between two solids is central to fields ranging from biomechanics to seismology. This failure is mediated by the propagation along the interface of various types of rupture fronts, covering a wide range of velocities. Among them are the so-called slow fronts, which are recently discovered fronts much slower than th...

Slow earthquakes, preseismic velocity changes, and the origin of slow frictional stick-slip.

Earthquakes normally occur as frictional stick-slip instabilities, resulting in catastrophic failure and seismic rupture. Tectonic faults also fail in slow earthquakes with rupture durations of months or more, yet their origin is poorly understood. Here, we present laboratory observations of repetitive, slow stick-slip in serpentinite fault zones and mechanical evidence for their origin. We doc...

Perturbation Stability of Frictional Sliding with Varying Normal Force

In many systems, the normal force at friction contacts is not constant, but instead is a function of the system's state variables. Examples include machine tools, friction dampers, brake systems and robotic contact with the environment. Friction at these contacts has been shown to possess dynamics associated with changes in normal force. In an earlier paper, the authors derived a critical value...

Stability of Sliding Frictional Surfaces with Varying Normal Force

This paper presents the stability analysis of a single degree of freedom elastic system following a rateand state-dependent friction law. Normal force is assumed to depend on the displacement, velocity and acceleration of the sliding interface. The history dependence of friction on normal force is included in the analysis. It is shown that to achieve steady sliding, system sti ness must exceed ...

Stability of rigid-body dynamics with sliding frictional contacts

The use of rigid body models during frictional contact i s often justified by proving the existence of a unique solution to the forward dynamic equations. The implicit assumption here is that the contact forces so obtained are stable. In this paper, the rigid-body assumption is relaxed and bodyto-body contacts are modeled using springs and dampers. A singular perturbation analysis reveals addit...
