Sensitivity of Fine-Scale Structure in Tropical Cyclone Boundary Layer to Model Horizontal Resolution at Sub-Kilometer Grid Spacing

چکیده

In view of the increasing interest in explicit simulation fine-scale features tropical cyclone (TC) boundary layer (TCBL), effects horizontal grid spacing on a 7–10 h an idealized TC are examined using Weather Research and Forecast (ARW-WRF) mesoscale model with one-way moving nests nonlinear backscatter anisotropy (NBA) sub-grid-scale (SGS) scheme. general, reducing from 2 km to 500 m tends produce stronger lower minimum sea level pressure (MSLP), surface winds, smaller inner core size. However, large eddies cannot be resolved at these spacings. contrast, 166 further 55 leads decrease intensity increase inner-core Moreover, although 166-m starts resolve terms TCBL rolls tornado-scale vortex, use finest shorter wavelengths turbulent motion multi-scale turbulence interaction. It is concluded that sub-100-meters desirable more detailed structure vortices, while relatively coarse sub-kilometer (e.g., m) cost-effective feasible for research not interested processes real-time operational forecasting near future.

Tropical Cyclone Boundary Layer Shocks

This paper presents numerical solutions and idealized analytical solutions of axisymmetric, f -plane models of the tropical cyclone boundary layer. In the numerical model, the boundary layer radial and tangential flow is forced by a specified pressure field, which can also be interpreted as a specified gradient balanced tangential wind field vgr(r) or vorticity field ζgr(r). When the specified ...

Stable Boundary Layer and Its Impact on Tropical Cyclone Structure in a Coupled Atmosphere–Ocean Model

The atmospheric boundary layer (BL) in tropical cyclones (TCs) connects deep convection within rainbands and the eyewall to the air–sea interface. Although the importance of the BL in TCs has been widely recognized in recent studies, how physical processes affect TC structure and intensity are still not well understood. This study focuses on a particular physical mechanism through which a TC-in...

Sensitivity of desert dust emissions to model horizontal grid spacing during the BodElE Dust Experiment 2005

The impact of model horizontal grid spacing on meteorology and dust emissions in the Bodélé depression was investigated during the well-documented period of the Bodélé Dust Experiment 2005 (BoDEx 2005). Five horizontal grid spacing ranging from 100 km to 5 km were tested. The main conclusion of these sensitivity tests is that the meteorology of the Bodélé depression is quite insensitive to mode...

Simulations of Cyclone Sidr in the Bay of Bengal with a high-resolution model: sensitivity to large-scale boundary forcing

The predictability of Cyclone Sidr in the Bay of Bengal was explored in terms of track and intensity using the Advanced Research Hurricane Weather Research Forecast (AHW) model. This constitutes the first application of the AHW over an area that lies outside the region of the North Atlantic for which this model was developed and tested. Several experiments were conducted to understand the possi...

Sensitivity to open boundary forcing in a fine-resolution model of the Iberian shelf-slope region

Correspondence to: I. G. Stevens Abstract. A fine-resolution primitive equation numerical model is constructed for the Iberian continental shelf and slope region, with open boundaries to the north, south and west. The model is forced by climatological wind fields and relaxed at the surface to climatological temperature and salinity fields. A series of numerical experiments is conducted to inves...
