Circuits and circuit disorders of the basal ganglia.
Views of the anatomy and function of the basal ganglia and their role in motor and nonmotor disorders have undergone major revisions during the past decades. The basal ganglia are now appreciated as components of parallel, reentrant cortico-subcortical circuits, which originate from individual cortical areas, traverse the basal ganglia and thalamus, and terminate in their respective areas of or...
متن کاملSimulations of pharmacological actions in the basal ganglia circuit
We have carried out computational simulations to investigate pharmacological effects in the basal ganglia (BG). Results of our simulations showed that dopamine depletion induces a time delay of the saccade eye movements and an oscillatory behavior of the neuronal activity in the BG. We also suggest that the oscillatory behavior is originated from formation of closed loop circuits in the BG.
متن کاملStriatal Plasticity and Basal Ganglia Circuit Function
The dorsal striatum, which consists of the caudate and putamen, is the gateway to the basal ganglia. It receives convergent excitatory afferents from cortex and thalamus and forms the origin of the direct and indirect pathways, which are distinct basal ganglia circuits involved in motor control. It is also a major site of activity-dependent synaptic plasticity. Striatal plasticity alters the tr...
متن کاملMovement Disorders Following Cerebrovascular Lesion in the Basal Ganglia Circuit
Movement disorders are primarily associated with the basal ganglia and the thalamus; therefore, movement disorders are more frequently manifest after stroke compared with neurological injuries associated with other structures of the brain. Overall clinical features, such as types of movement disorder, the time of onset and prognosis, are similar with movement disorders after stroke in other str...
