Serpentinites of Different Tectonic Origin in an Exhumed Subduction Complex (New Caledonia, SW Pacific)

چکیده

Owing to the importance of serpentinites for planetary geochemical and geodynamic processes, there has been much work discerning origins their parent rocks, including distinguishing between derived from a subducting plate versus overlying mantle in exhumed subduction complexes. The island New Caledonia (SW Pacific Ocean) provides rare window into Cenozoic processes. is unique exposing both an exceptionally preserved high-pressure, low-temperature complex one largest supra-subduction zone ophiolites world. Previous studies disagree on origin complex. In this study, we analyze 23 whole-rock major trace element geochemistry stable isotope (δD, δ18O) compositions. Our data reveal two distinct groups serpentinites: Group I samples northern portion are pervasively serpentinized, exhibit enriched heavy earth (REE) compositions δ18O values +6.7‰ +10.2‰. contrast, II south preserve relict orthopyroxene olivine, show depleted comparatively lower +5.1‰ +8.0‰. We interpret derive downgoing mantle, whereas wedge, exhibiting remarkable similarity REE structurally ophiolite. results establish as unusual natural record entrainment exhumation wedge oceanic zone.

Marine mammal strandings in the New Caledonia region, Southwest Pacific.

Four hundred twenty three marine mammals, in 72 stranding events, were recorded between 1877 and 2005 in New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, and Vanuatu in the southwest Pacific. Sixteen species were represented in this count, including: minke whale, Balaenoptera acutorostrata (1 single stranding), sei whale, B. borealis (1 single stranding), blue whale, B. musculus (1 single stranding), humpba...

In the Case of Maden Complex, Geochemical Constraints on the Origin and Tectonic Implication of Eocene Magmatism in SE Turkey

The origin and geodynamic setting of the Maden Complex, which is situated in the Bitlis–Zagros Suture Zone in the Southeast Anatolian Orogenic Belt, is still controversial due to lack of systematic geological and geochemical data. Here we present new whole rock major–trace–rare earth element data from the Middle Eocene volcanic rocks exposed in Maden Complex and discuss their origin in the ligh...

Permeability measurements and precipitation sealing of basalt in an ancient exhumed subduction-zone fault

We conducted permeability measurements of basalt sampled from an exhumed ancient fault zone in the Cretaceous Shimanto accretionary complex in Japan, in order to investigate permeability structure and evolution following shear failure. Permeability showed a strong reduction with increase in the e#ective confining pressure and temperature. Rapid sealing at elevated temperatures was observed duri...

Annual sediment primary production and respiration in a large coral reef lagoon (SW New Caledonia)

Sediment photosynthetic production and community respiration were investigated for 1 yr in the south-west lagoon of New Caledonia (surface area: 2000 km'; mean depth: 21 m). Metabolic fluxes were measuredbat the water-sediment interface using benthic enclosures, at 60 sampling stations randomly distributed in space and time. Mean gross primary production (Pg) was 12.06 mol C m-' yr-l. Mean resp...
