Setting Priorities in River Management Using Habitat Suitability Models

چکیده

Worldwide river systems are under pressure from human development. River managers need to identify the most important stressors in a stream basin, propose effective management interventions for restoration. In European Union, Water Framework Directive proposes ecological status as endpoint these interventions. Many decision support tools exist that use predictive water quality models evaluate different scenarios, but only few consider river’s this analysis explicitly. This paper presents novel method, which combines abiotic monitoring data and biological data, provide information insight on why does not reach good status. We habitat suitability tool, can define scenarios. To end, we disassemble into its individual building blocks, i.e., community composition, perform an gap analysis. paper, present our method underlying concepts, illustrate benefits by applying regional level Flanders using biotic index, Multimetric Macroinvertebrate Index (MMIF). calculated number of correctly classified instances (CCI = 47.7%) root-mean-square error (RMSE 0.18) MMIF class value. Furthermore, there is monotonic decreasing relationship between results priority classification expressed MMIF, strengthened inclusion concepts (Pearson’s R2 −0.92 vs. −0.87). addition, complementary derived legal targets set variables. Thus, proposed further optimize sake sustainable decisions management.

Uncertainty in Various Habitat Suitability Models and Its Impact on Habitat Suitability Estimates for Fish

Species distribution models (SDMs) are extensively used to project habitat suitability of species in stream ecological studies. Owing to complex sources of uncertainty, such models may yield projections with varying degrees of uncertainty. To better understand projected spatial distributions and the variability between habitat suitability projections, this study uses five SDMs that are based on...

Global habitat suitability models of terrestrial mammals.

Detailed large-scale information on mammal distribution has often been lacking, hindering conservation efforts. We used the information from the 2009 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as a baseline for developing habitat suitability models for 5027 out of 5330 known terrestrial mammal species, based on their habitat relationships. We focused on the following environmental variables: land cove...

Habitat suitability models for desert amphibians

A fundamental step in conserving biodiversity is identification of quality habitat needed to sustain populations of target species. We used coarse scale environmental features (soil water holding capacity, soil texture, slope, elevation, and proximity to drainage channels) to predict habitat suitability for four species of desert amphibians in Big Bend National Park, USA: Scaphiopus couchii, Bu...

Habitat suitability (HS) modeling relates a species’ potential presence/absence to a set of environmental variables. because of stochastic or demographic population fluctuations, relating abundance to environment is difficult and generally requires time-series of population-density data. Here, I propose an approach to compute relative capacity of a set of habitat classes. I defined relative cap...

Using Risk Assessment and Habitat Suitability Models to Prioritise Invasive Species for Management in a Changing Climate

Accounting for climate change in invasive species risk assessments improves our understanding of potential future impacts and enhances our preparedness for the arrival of new non-native species. We combined traditional risk assessment for invasive species with habitat suitability modeling to assess risk to biodiversity based on climate change. We demonstrate our method by assessing the risk for...
