Sexual orientation as an overlooked variable: terminological, methodological, and contextual issues concerning sexuality measurement as part of „representative” surveys. Do 4 % still count?

Research has long pointed to a number of health inequalities and differences in the quality life people, whose main distinguishing feature is their sexual orientation, self-identification, or sexuality general. However, this diversity rarely included among demographic questions, so we currently face not only unavailability essential data but also many ambiguities associated with “measurement sexuality” research. This article four interconnected primary goals. First, contribute discussion, which may identify absence items determining respondents relevant studies as significant barrier limiting availability information about non-heterosexual people. Further, it clarifies key terminological issues, are mainly related continually evolving sexual-identity terminology. Third, focuses on discussion methodological contextual pitfalls, touch issue measuring field various types selection bias. In final part, question “representativeness” available research results discussed, using current Czech foreign representative surveys, whether still true that people make up 4% population addressed.
