Similarity among eucalyptus planted areas based on leaf-cutting ant nest sizes

چکیده
Techniques for leaf-cutting ant control have been investigated in literature due to the importance of damage they cause agriculture. Plantations with large territorial extensions, which can be contiguous or not, are usually subdivided into local administration collect data determine frequencies and area occupied by nests. The objective this work was build a relationship similarities among different geographical regions using frequency size nests applying Information Bottleneck method principal component analysis. approach applied ants genus Atta cultivated Eucalyptus spp. forests São Paulo State, Brazil. results showed similar that not geographically close, regarding occurrence With information, administrators will able coordinate more precisely allocation bait, material workers vast territories, avoiding resources waste.

Leaf-cutting ant nests near roads increase fitness of exotic plant species in natural protected areas.
Understanding the mechanisms that promote the invasion of natural protected areas by exotic plants is a central concern for ecology. We demonstrated that nests of the leaf-cutting ant, Acromyrmex lobicornis, near roadsides promote the abundance, growth and reproduction of two exotic plant species, Carduus nutans and Onopordum acanthium, in a national park in northern Patagonia, Argentina and de...
متن کاملForager size of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in a mature eucalyptus forest in Brazil.
We determined the size characteristics of foragers of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens in a mature eucalyptus forest in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, at daytime (7:30 to 10:00 hr) and nighttime (19:00 to 23:00 hr). There were no significant differences between daytime and nighttime ant mass (Ma), but leaf fragment mass (Ml) and burden (B = [Ma + Ml]/Ma), which indicates ...
متن کاملFungal-Fungal Interactions in Leaf-Cutting Ant Agriculture
Many organisms participate in symbiotic relationships with other organisms, yet studies of symbioses typically have focused on the reciprocal costs and benefits within a particular host-symbiont pair. Recent studies indicate that many ecological interactions involve alliances of symbionts acting together as mutualistic consortia against other consortia. Such interacting consortia are likely to ...
متن کاملWaste management in the leaf-cutting ant Atta colombica
Unlike most leaf-cutting ants, which have underground waste dumps, the leaf-cutting ant Atta colombica dumps waste in a heap outside the nest. Waste is hazardous, as it is contaminated with pathogens. We investigated the organization of the workforce involved in outside-nest tasks (foraging, waste disposal) and quantified task switching and heap location to test hypotheses that these tasks are ...
متن کاملGenetic royal cheats in leaf-cutting ant societies.
Social groups are vulnerable to cheating because the reproductive interests of group members are rarely identical. All cooperative systems are therefore predicted to involve a mix of cooperative and cheating genotypes, with the frequency of the latter being constrained by the suppressive abilities of the former. The most significant potential conflict in social insect colonies is over which ind...
