Sintering behavior of combusted iron powder in a packed bed reactor with nitrogen and hydrogen

Sintering behavior of micron-sized combusted iron powder is studied in a packed bed reactor, at various temperatures under inert (nitrogen) and reducing (hydrogen) conditions. Compression tests are subsequently used to quantify the degree sintering. A sintering model, based on formation solid bridge through state surface diffusion atoms, matches experimental results. occurs ≥575°C both nitrogen hydrogen atmospheres increases exponentially with temperature. The observed decrease reduction rate high not caused by process but wüstite as an intermediate species, leading dense layer. Iron whiskers form (≥700°C) combination low rates (≤25 vol% H2), production sub-micron fines.
