Size Effect on Hygroscopicity of Waterlogged Archaeological Wood by Simultaneous Dynamic Vapour Sorption

چکیده

Hygroscopicity is one of the most important properties wood and plays a decisive role in its dimensional stability. In this context, conservation plans for waterlogged archaeological (WAW) relevant artefacts must be created. The size sample required moisture sorption assessment may affect results (and thus perception of) hygroscopicity testing artefact. Herein, to investigate effects on WAW as measured via dynamic vapour (DVS), typical recent (i.e., sound) are processed into four differently sized samples, ranging thickness from 200 mesh millimetre. equilibrium contents (EMCs) samples simultaneously using simultaneous DVS. isotherms show that EMC values at each relative humidity increase decreases, with superfine powder achieving highest all samples. Although has higher than wood, effect hygroscopic surprisingly not pronounced wood. addition, hysteresis between different sizes significantly smaller reference Furthermore, regarding standard deviations parameters obtained Guggenheim Anderson de Boer Hailwood–Horrobin models, much those This further verifies disappearance WAW.

Characterisation of archaeological waterlogged wood by pyrolytic and mass spectrometric techniques.

Two techniques based on analytical pyrolysis and mass spectrometry, direct exposure-MS (DE-MS) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), were used to characterise waterlogged archaeological wood and to study degradation patterns of wood in aqueous environments. The two techniques were applied to samples from the excavation of the Site of the Ancient Ships of Pisa San Rossor...

Evaluation of the Water Sorption Capacity of Some Polymeric Materials by Dynamic Vapour Sorption

Water sorption/desorption behaviour of the materials is very relevant for their application in pharmaceutical, food, sensor, electronics, fuel cell and biomedical fields. The sorption/desorption equilibrium, which is related with the plasticity and mechanical properties of the materials, as well as the kinetics of water sorption/ desorption, which is related to the transport properties, are int...

An Evaluation of Supercritical Drying and PEG/Freeze-drying of Waterlogged Archaeological Wood

Supercritical carbon dioxide has replaced many liquid organic solvents in industry due to its tunable solvent properties, environmental friendliness, and easily achievable critical parameters. The unique properties of supercritical fluids in general, such as gas-like diffusivity and zero surface tension, make them particularly applicable to the field of conservation. This presentation reports o...

In situ polymerisation of isoeugenol as a green consolidation method for waterlogged archaeological wood

Waterlogged archaeological wood is often in need of consolidation prior to drying to prevent shrinkage and cracking of the object. There is a need for new greener materials (than for example polyethylene glycol) and methods for consolidation to be developed. The use of wood-based components could provide good interaction between the consolidant and the remaining wood structure and would also su...

Chemical Modification of Pine Wood with Propionic Anhydride: Effect on Decay Resistance and Sorption of Water Vapour

The purpose of this paper is to show the effects of level of substitution with a linear chain anhydride (propionic anhydride) on decay resistance and on water vapour sorption of modified Scots pine sapwood. The work described herein has demonstrated that chemically modified Scots pine sapwood with propionic anhydride afforded substantial bioprotection against Coniophora puteana. It required a w...
