چکیده
The study reported here confirms that laser surface melting (LSM) can be employed to modify the hardness and shear banding behaviour of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). More specifically, by conducting LSM operations on Zr-based Vitreloy 105 BMG in ambient atmosphere using a nanosecond laser, it was found hardening achieved, addition well-known softening effect. Besides, presence compressive residual stress an increased introduction crystalline precipitates accompanied LSM-induced hardening. On contrary, tensile reduced fraction were observed for softened post-LSM. Finally, differences shear-banding mechanisms detected near irradiated regions. overall serrated flow but important bands events following LSM-based stress. In contrast, more pronounced flows likely distribution activity well beneath promoted when resulted

Extreme rejuvenation and softening in a bulk metallic glass
Rejuvenation of metallic glasses, bringing them to higher-energy states, is of interest in improving their plasticity. The mechanisms of rejuvenation are poorly understood, and its limits remain unexplored. We use constrained loading in compression to impose substantial plastic flow on a zirconium-based bulk metallic glass. The maximum measured effects are that the hardness of the glass decreas...
متن کاملLaser Shock Peening on Zr-based Bulk Metallic Glass and Its Effect on Plasticity: Experiment and Modeling
The Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are a new family of attractive materials with good glass-forming ability and excellent mechanical properties, such as high strength and good wear resistance, which make them candidates for structural and biomedical materials. Although the mechanical behavior of BMGs has been widely investigated, their deformation mechanisms are still poorly understood. ...
متن کاملEffects of annealing and specimen geometry on dynamic compression of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass
High strain-rate compression experiments were performed with a split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) at 500–4000/s on cylindrical samples of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (LM-1) in both the fully amorphous and annealed conditions. The effects of changes to the specimen geometry (i.e., L/D ratio) and the material heat treatment [i.e., annealing versus amorphous (as-received)], on the peak stress,...
متن کاملEffect of Loading Rate on Dynamic Fracture Morphology of a Zr-Based Bulk Metallic Glass
Low-velocity plate impact experiments using a single-stage gas-gun are performed on Zr58.5Cu15.6Ni12.8Al10.3Nb2.8. Compressive fracture surfaces of the samples subjected to varying impact velocities and stress amplitudes are evaluated in order to study their loading rate dependence. Samples impacted at increasing loading rates, from increasing velocities of impact, show a larger extent of local...
متن کاملEffect of high strain rates on peak stress in a Zr-based bulk metallic glass
The mechanical behavior of Zr41.25Ti13.75Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 LM-1 has been extensively characterized under quasistatic loading conditions; however, its mechanical behavior under dynamic loading conditions is currently not well understood. A Split–Hopkinson pressure bar SHPB and a single-stage gas gun are employed to characterize the mechanical behavior of LM-1 in the strain-rate regime of 102–105 ...
