Soil Enzyme Activity as Affected by Land-Use, Salinity, and Groundwater Fluctuations in Wetland Soils of the Prairie Pothole Region

چکیده

Land-use change and climatic variability are significant drivers for the loss of ecosystem services soil quality in prairie pothole region (PPR) wetland systems. induced changes groundwater table salinity may influence biogeochemical processes facilitated by extracellular enzymes (EEs) involved organic matter (SOM) decomposition. The effects changing on β-glucosidase (BG), N-acetyl glucosaminidase (NAG), alkaline phosphatase (AP) activities were assessed soils collected from three different adjacent riparian land-use practices PPR. In a microcosm study conducted over ten weeks, treated with (control, 6 mS cm−1, 12 cm−1) declining depths. Extracellular enzyme (EEAs) differed significantly (p < 0.05) among land-uses between impact EEAs non-significant > 0.05). Soil higher pasture, suggesting that resulted background SOC TN. reduced under deeper depth, except reverse BG site B, indicated lowered could lead to transitory drought stress SOM decomposers.

Responses of Dabbling Ducks to Wetland Conditions in the Prairie Pothole Region

—The relationships between wetland water conditions and breeding numbers of Mallard ( Anas platyrhynchos ), Northern Pintail ( A. acuta ), Blue-winged Teal ( A. discors ), and Northern Shoveler ( A. clypeata ) during May of 1992-1995, were examined on twelve study areas in the eastern Prairie Pothole Region. Data were collected on water levels (by wetland class [temporary, seasonal, semipermane...

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of groundwater affected by land use change

Compared to surface water, groundwater resources are the primary source of water supply in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran, hence the importance of the management of these resources .  In this regard, we assessed the effects of landuse changes on the qualitative and quantitative status of groundwater resources in Eshtehard region, Iran. Through processing and analyzing the satellite images, ...

Evidence for 20th century climate warming and wetland drying in the North American Prairie Pothole Region

The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North America is a globally important resource that provides abundant and valuable ecosystem goods and services in the form of biodiversity, groundwater recharge, water purification, flood attenuation, and water and forage for agriculture. Numerous studies have found these wetlands, which number in the millions, to be highly sensitive to climate variability. ...
