Soil sample pooling generates no consistent inference bias: a meta?analysis of 71 plant–soil feedback experiments

چکیده

There is current debate on how soil sample pooling affects the measurement of plant–soil feedbacks. Several studies have suggested that samples among experimental units reduces variance and can bias estimates However, it unclear whether has resulted in systematic mismeasurement feedbacks literature. Using data from 71 experiments, we tested pairwise feedback direction, magnitude differed treatments. We also altered our understanding abiotic biotic drivers influence Pooling was used 42% examined experiments. Contrary to predictions, did not affect mean effect size or within-experiment variance. Accounting for significantly alter conclude there no evidence systematically biases magnitude, across many studies. Given pool samples, researchers should be aware potential criticisms carefully consider design methods interpretation

A soil moisture–rainfall feedback mechanism 2. Numerical experiments

Here we develop a numerical model to investigate the hypothesis proposed by a companion paper [Eltahir, this issue], which describes a soil moisture–rainfall feedback mechanism. The model is designed to describe the seasonal evolution of the West African monsoon rainfall and is used to perform numerical experiments that elucidate the mechanisms of the response of rainfall to soil moisture anoma...

Expectation Consistent Approximate Inference

We propose a novel framework for deriving approximations for intractable probabilistic models. This framework is based on a free energy (negative log marginal likelihood) and can be seen as a generalization of adaptive TAP [1-3] and expectation propagation (EP) [4,5] The free energy is constructed from two approximating distributions which encode different aspects of the intractable model such ...

No consistent bimetric gravity?

Two-tensor, bimetric (or ‘‘f-g’’) gravity (BMG) was born as the fusion of the strong-interaction resonances of the 1960s (specifically that of a massive spin 2 field) with general relativity’s (GR) massless metric [1]. The idea was to join the two symmetrically by giving each its own Einstein-Hilbert action, then coupling the two resulting ‘‘spaces’’ through a nonderivative ‘‘mass term’’ that n...

A Fast, Consistent Kernel Two-Sample Test

A kernel embedding of probability distributions into reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS) has recently been proposed, which allows the comparison of two probability measures P and Q based on the distance between their respective embeddings: for a sufficiently rich RKHS, this distance is zero if and only if P and Q coincide. In using this distance as a statistic for a test of whether two sam...
