SOLES I: The Spin–Orbit Alignment of K2-140 b

Abstract Obliquity measurements for stars hosting relatively long-period giant planets with weak star-planet tidal interactions may play a key role in distinguishing between formation theories shorter-period hot Jupiters. Few such obliquity have been made to date due the small sample of known wide-orbiting, transiting Jovian-mass and challenging nature these targets, which tend long transit durations orbit faint stars. We report measurement Rossiter–McLaughlin effect across K2-140 b, Jupiter-mass planet period P = 6.57 days orbiting V 12.6 star. find that is an aligned system projected spin–orbit angle ? 0.5° ± 9.7°, suggesting dynamically cool history. This observation builds toward population tidally detached angles will enable direct comparison distribution close-orbiting hot-Jupiter orbital configurations, elucidating prevalent mechanisms each group.
