Solutions to Enhance Frequency Regulation in an Island System With Pumped-Hydro Storage Under 100% Renewable Energy Penetration

Seeking 100% renewable energy source (RES) penetration in low-inertia, isolated grids presents major challenges, including frequency control and stability. This is the case small island systems relying on variable RES pumped-hydro storage, where limited ramping capabilities of hydro turbines compromise their response. In this study, solutions are examined to allow operation such under conditions. The Greek Ikaria used as a study case, supplied by hybrid RES-storage facility, consisting hydroelectric units, pumping facility wind farm. Solutions include implementation deflector provision fast reserves Pelton turbines, primary farm, enhancement speed pump contribute regulation, and, at further step, installation battery storage provide response for effective regulation. All comparatively assessed via simulation demonstrate that proposed allows albeit detriment efficiency, whereas pumps may also regulation contingencies. It would decisively enhance security operation, while allowing improved tracking power variations normal operation; best results achieved when batteries combined with other supplementary measures, reduced capacity.
