Solvothermal Synthesis Combined with Design of Experiments—Optimization Approach for Magnetite Nanocrystal Clusters

Magnetite nanocrystal clusters are being investigated for their potential applications in catalysis, magnetic separation, and drug delivery. Controlling size distribution is of paramount importance often requires tedious trial-and-error experimentation to determine the optimal conditions necessary synthesize with desired properties. In this work, magnetite were prepared via a one-pot solvothermal reaction, starting from an available protocol. order optimize experimental factors controlling synthesis, response surface methodology (RSM) was used. The can be varied by changing amount stabilizer (tribasic sodium citrate) solvent ratio (diethylene glycol/ethylene glycol). Tuning during optimization process limited one factor at time, while design allows variation factors’ levels simultaneously. efficiency achieve maximum refinement independent variables (stabilizer amount, diethylene glycol (DEG/EG) ratio) towards best spherical desirable (measured scanning electron microscopy dynamic light scattering) narrow as responses proven tested. procedure based on RSM then used reverse mode knowledge predict synthesis required obtain good distribution. model validated using plethora statistical methods. facilitate overcoming systematic model-guided approach.
