چکیده
Universalities and intriguing analogies in the statistics of avalanches are revealed for three physical systems defined on largely different length energy scales. Earthquakes induced by tectonic scale dynamics, micro-scale level quakes observed from slipping crystallographic planes metals a one-dimensional, room-scale spring-block type Burridge-Knopoff model is studied similar statistical viewpoints. The validity Gutenberg-Richter law probability density energies dissipated proven all systems. By analysing data seismic zones performing acoustic detection Zn samples under deformation, universality involved scaling exponent revealed. With proper parameter choices 1D able to reproduce same law. recurrence times earthquakes micro-quakes with magnitudes above given threshold present again distributions striking quantitative similarities. However, cannot account correlations such statistics.

The Two-dimensional Nonlinear Burridge-Knopoff Model of Earthquakes
We present a two-dimensional spring-block model of earthquakes with the full nonlinear equations for the forces in terms of displacements. Correspondence of our linearized version to earlier models reveals in them inherently asymmetric elastic properties. Our model generalizes those models and allows an investigation of the effects of internal strains and vectorial forces. The former is found t...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal correlations of earthquakes in the continuum limit of the one-dimensional Burridge-Knopoff model
Spatiotemporal correlations of the one-dimensional spring-block (BurridgeKnopoff) model of earthquakes, either with or without the viscosity term, are studied by means of numerical computer simulations. The continuum limit of the model is examined by systematically investigating the model properties with varying the block-size parameter a toward a→ 0. The Kelvin viscosity term is introduced so ...
متن کاملSimulation of the Burridge-Knopoff model of earthquakes with variable range stress transfer.
Simple models of earthquake faults are important for understanding the mechanisms for their observed behavior, such as Gutenberg-Richter scaling and the relation between large and small events, which is the basis for various forecasting methods. Although cellular automaton models have been studied extensively in the long-range stress transfer limit, this limit has not been studied for the Burri...
متن کاملSimulation study of the two-dimensional Burridge-Knopoff model of earthquakes
Spatiotemporal correlations of the two-dimensional spring-block (Burridge-Knopoff) model of earthquakes are extensively studied by means of numerical computer simulations. The model is found to exhibit either a " subcritical " , " supercritical " or " near-critical " behavior, depending on the values of the model parameters. Transition between the " subcritical " and " su-percritical " regimes ...
متن کاملthe relationship between learners critical thinking ability and their performance in the reading sections of the tofel and ielts test
the study reflected in this thesis aims at finding out relationships between critical thinking (ct), and the reading sections of tofel and ielts tests. the study tries to find any relationships between the ct ability of students and their performance on reading tests of tofel and academic ielts. however, no research has ever been conducted to investigate the relationship between ct and the read...
