Statistical mechanics of systems with negative temperature

چکیده

Do negative absolute temperatures matter physics and specifically Statistical Physics? We provide evidence that we can certainly answer positively to this vexata quaestio. The great majority of models investigated by statistical mechanics over almost one century a half exhibit positive temperature, because their entropy is nondecreasing function energy. Since more than ago it has been realized may not be the case for some physical systems as incompressible fluids, nuclear magnetic chains, lasers, cold atoms optical waveguides. review these examples discuss peculiar thermodynamic properties, which have associated presence regimes, characterized temperatures. As reported in review, ambiguity inherent definition recurrently raised harsh debate about possibility considering temperature states genuine equilibrium ones. Here show are consistent with well non-equilibrium thermodynamics. In particular, thermometry, thermodynamics cyclic transformations, ensemble equivalence, fluctuation-dissipation relations, response theory even transport processes reformulated include them, thus dissipating any prejudice exceptionality, typically presumed manifestation transient metastable effects.

Statistical Mechanics of Granular Systems

From a first principles theory for the behavior of smooth grarular systems, we derive the form for the instantaneous dissipative force acting between two grains. The present model, which is based on the classical harmonic crystal, reproduces the dependence of the kinetic energy dissipation on the grain deformation obtained by models that assume a viscoelastic behavior (without permanent plastic...

Statistical Mechanics of Lattice Systems

We study the thermodynamic limit for a classical system of particles on a lattice and prove the existence of infinite volume correlation functions for a "large" set of potentials and temperatures. §

Statistical mechanics of program systems

Abstract We discuss the collective behaviour of a set of operators and variables that constitute a program and the emergence of meaningful computational properties in the language of statistical mechanics. This is done by appropriately modifying available Monte Carlo methods to deal with hierarchical structures. The study suggests, in analogy with simulated annealing, a method to automatically ...

Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics of Open Classical Systems

We describe the ergodic and thermodynamical properties of chains of anharmonic oscillators coupled, at the boundaries, to heat reservoirs at positive and different temperatures. We discuss existence and uniqueness of stationary states, rate of convergence to stationarity, heat flows and entropy production, Kubo formula and Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem.

Equilibrium statistical mechanics of bipartite spin systems

Aim of this paper is to give an extensive treatment of bipartite mean field spin systems, ordered and disordered: at first, bipartite ferromagnets are investigated, achieving an explicit expression for the free energy trough a new minimax variational principle. Furthermore via the Hamilton-Jacobi technique the same free energy structure is obtained together with the existence of its thermodynam...
