Strategic Timing and Dynamic Pricing for Online Resource Allocation

This paper optimizes dynamic pricing and real-time resource allocation policies for a platform facing nontransferable capacity, stochastic demand-capacity imbalances, strategic customers with heterogenous price time sensitivities. We characterize the optimal mechanism, which specifies menu of prices allocations. Service timing are used strategically to: (i) dynamically manage (ii) provide discriminated service levels. The balance between these two objectives depends on customer heterogeneity customers’ policy may feature idlenexss (deliberately rejecting incoming requests discrimination), late prioritization (clearing queue delayed customers), deliberate late-service rejection (focusing demand by rationing capacity customers). Surprisingly, charged to time-sensitive is not increasing demand—high trigger lower prices.
