Structuring for innovative responses to human resource challenges: A skunk works approach

Increasingly, organizations find that they need to be more flexible and innovative in responding unexpected emergent human resource (HR) issues affecting their members, such as outbreaks of infectious diseases (e.g., COVID-19) forcing massive transition remote work, changes industry landscape altering learning development, politically-driven global mobility regulations restricting people flow. Organizations have long utilized informal structures known “skunk works”, groups empowered work rapidly with minimal management constraints, address technological challenges. In this article, we aim better understand when how similarly employ skunk works-like help them deal evolving HR-related We discuss three examples approach. then integrate the insights from these develop a framework supported by set research questions guide future scholarship into HR works. emphasize there are both benefits drawbacks organizational for addressing challenges alongside regular, established ways working.
