Study of the rejection of contaminants of emerging concern by a biomimetic aquaporin hollow fiber forward osmosis membrane

Forward osmosis (FO) plays an increasingly important role in membrane processes because of its advantages compared to traditional pressure-driven processes. There are different types water-selective FO membranes. In this study, a biomimetic hollow fiber module comprising active layer polyamide thin film composite (TFC) with integrated aquaporin proteins and effective area 0.6 m2 is used study the rejection 24 Contaminants Emerging Concern (CECs). The rejections obtained for all contaminants studied were higher than 93 % 19 them up 99 reached. It was observed that although tested compounds showed very close 100 %, they not completely recovered feed solution which makes retention within factor be considered. Hence, two rinses necessary after each operation recover contaminant. results analyzed considering physicochemical properties (molecular weight, charge hydrophobicity) contaminants.
