UK Biobank: a model for public engagement?

Whilst in other applications of genetic technology the public debate has begun only when a piece of research has been completed, public consultations on biobanking began in 2000, before the funding for UK Biobank was even agreed, and have continued throughout its development. UK Biobank has obvious attractions for the British public. It is being set up specifically as a resource for research in...

Subsampling the Gibbs Sampler: Variance Reduction

Subsampling the output of a Gibbs sampler in a non-systematic fashion can improve the e ciency of marginal estimators if the subsampling strategy is tied to the actual updates made. We illustrate this point by example, approximation, and asymptotics. The results hold both for random scan and xed scan Gibbs samplers.

Variance component estimation on female fertility traits in beef cattle

The purpose of this review is to define possible breeding objectives for Southern African beef cattle farmers and to review different means of expressing genetic reproductive merit. The breeding objective considered was to maximize the number of calves born or weaned for a given number of cows in a herd under prevailing environmental and management conditions. This is a complex trait that has m...

Quantification of frequency-dependent genetic architectures and action of negative selection in 25 UK Biobank traits

Understanding the role of rare variants is important in elucidating the genetic basis of human diseases and complex traits. It is widely believed that negative selection can cause rare variants to have larger per-allele effect sizes than common variants. Here, we develop a method to estimate the minor allele frequency (MAF) dependence of SNP effect sizes. We use a model in which per-allele effe...
