Surface Mass Balance Controlled by Local Surface Slope in Inland Antarctica: Implications for Ice‐Sheet Mass Balance and Oldest Ice Delineation in Dome Fuji

چکیده
The limited number of surface mass balance (SMB) observations in the Antarctic inland hampers estimates ice-sheet contribution to global sea level and locations with million-year-old ice. We present finely resolved SMB over past three centuries a low-accumulation region significant depth hoar formation on Dome Fuji derived from ∼1,100 km microwave radar stratigraphy dated firn core. regional-mean 264 years is estimated ∼22.5 ± 3.3 kg m−2 a−1, but large local variability up 30%. found that negatively correlated slope at scales few hundred meters, resulting anomalous zones low which represent as much 8–10% total plateau if SMB-slope relationship more widely valid. This impact should be investigated further improve sea-level contribution.

Surface mass-balance changes of the Greenland ice sheet
Mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet over the past decade has caused the impression that the ice sheet has been behaving anomalously to the warming of the 1990s. We have reconstructed the recent (1866–2005) surface mass-balance (SMB) history of the Greenland ice sheet on a 5 5 km grid using a runoff-retention model based on the positive degree-day method. The model is forced with new datasets...
متن کاملConventional versus reference-surface mass balance
Glacier surface mass balance evaluated over the actual glacier geometry depends not only on climatic variations, but also on the dynamic adjustment of glacier geometry. Therefore, it has been proposed that reference-surface balances calculated over a constant glacier hypsometry are better suited for climatic interpretation. Here we present a comparison of 82 year modelled time series (1926– 200...
متن کاملSurface mass balance contributions to acceleration of Antarctic ice mass loss during 2003–2013
Recent observations from satellite gravimetry (the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission) suggest an acceleration of ice mass loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS). The contribution of surface mass balance changes (due to variable precipitation) is compared with GRACE-derived mass loss acceleration by assessing the estimated contribution of snow mass from meteorological rean...
