چکیده

Acoustic scattering can be used to estimate Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC) through acoustic inversion methods. Current SSC quantification methods are mostly unable observe both spatial and temporal variations. Here, we assess the possibility measure using a Multibeam Echosounder (MBES). MBES combine large covering in water column capability ‘on route’, allowing better representativity of measurements. Time-series raw EM3002-MBES data at 300 kHz were acquired during 5-hours field experiment fixed location Aulne macrotidal estuary (France) ebb, ensuring sufficient Concurrently, 4-frequencies Backscattering System (ABS) profiles column, as well turbidity profiles, further converted into collected samples. An original in-situ calibration was performed on MBES, tungsten sphere known properties, which allowed corrections made volume backscattered levels over echosounder fan. Using ABS-derived equivalent radii, signal inverted retrieve an estimate. Good consistency between time-series observations turbidity-derived is observed. This demonstrates potential use for 3-dimensional coastal areas, great interest sediment flux quantification.

Automatic Statistical Processing of Multibeam Echosounder Data

This paper presents the CUBE (Combined Uncertainty and Bathymetry Estimator) algorithm. Our aim is to take advantage of statistical redundancy in dense Multibeam Echosounder data to identify outliers while tracking the uncertainty associated with the estimates that we make of the true depth in the survey area. We recognize that a completely automatic system is improbable, but propose that signi...

The Development of the Multibeam Echosounder: A Historical Account

me first paper on narrow-beam echosounding was published in 1960. Since then, the advantages of the principle of multibeam swath bathymetry for seabed mapping have been recognized by many institutions working in the field of underwater area mapping. We intend to review some of the developments the multibcam cchosoundcr has undergone in order to better understand the challenges facing the field ...

Dual Behavior of Suspended Sediment Concentration in a Regulated River

Better understanding of suspended sediment transport processes allows for better management of both rivers and coasts. Based on field data and sediment transport energy theory, this study presents an analysis on the suspended sediment hysteresis in the Lower Tenryu River of Japan in connection to the channel carrying capacity of suspended sediment and morphological characteristics. The transpor...

Estimating Suspended Sediment Concentration in Streams by Diffuse Light Attenuation

A light attenuation sensor system (LASS) for measurements in waters is described in this paper. The LASS records irradiance at multiple levels in the water column to provide a measure of the diffuse light attenuation coefficient which is strongly affected by suspended sediment. Dimensional analysis and geometric optical theory are used to relate the irradiance attenuation to sediment properties...

Establishing the Relationship between Turbidity and Total Suspended Sediment Concentration

This laboratory work examines the relationship between turbidity (NTU) and total suspended sediment concentration (TSS, mg/L) for a Cecil Ap soil, a common Southeastern Piedmont soil type. We show a 1:1 correlation between NTU and TSS for the silt and clay fractions, but a smaller ratio for clay and bulk-soil samples. These results suggest that NTU measurements can be used to estimate sediment ...
