Sustainable Surface Water Storage Development Pathways and Acceptable Limits for River Basins

This paper addresses the questions of acceptable upper limits for storage development and how best to deploy capacity in long-term planning built surface water river basins. Storage-yield curves are used establish sustainable pathways a basin under range environmental flow release scenarios. Optimal distribution at sub-basin level, which complies with an identified pathway, can also be estimated. Two new indices introduced—Water Supply Sustainability Environmental Flow Sustainability—to help decide management strategies most appropriate basin. Average conservative maximum illustrated two example Conservative withdrawal from 45–50% 60–65% mean annual runoff. The approach compare current level pathway indicate parts over- or under-exploited.
