Swimming droplets in 1D geometries: an active Bretherton problem

چکیده
We investigate experimentally the behavior of self-propelled water-in-oil droplets, confined in capillaries different square and circular cross-sections. The droplet's activity comes from formation swollen micelles at its interface. In straight velocity droplet decreases with increasing confinement. However very high confinement, converges toward a non-zero value, so that even long droplets swim. Swimming droplets driven by a surface wave
Self-propelling motion is ubiquitous for soft active objects such as crawling cells, active filaments, and liquid droplets moving on surfaces. Deformation and energy dissipation are required for self-propulsion of both living and non-living matter. From the perspective of physics, searching for universal laws of self-propelled motions in a dissipative environment is worthwhile, regardless of th...

The climatological distribution of clouds is tightly coupled to large-scale circulation. Net cloud radiative forcing is mainly the result of boundary layer clouds in large-scale subsidence. Deep convective cloud systems exert longand shortwave cloud forcing that nearly cancel out each other. The extent of this cancellation depends strongly on the vertical motion profi le, suggesting that if the...
متن کاملActive polar fluid flow in finite droplets.
We present a continuum level analytical model of a droplet of active contractile fluid consisting of filaments and motors. We calculate the steady state flows that result from a splayed polarisation of the filaments. We account for interaction with the external medium by imposing a viscous friction at the fixed droplet boundary. We then show that the droplet has non-zero force dipole and quadru...
متن کاملAn Efficient Algorithm for the 1D Total Visibility-Index Problem
Let T be a terrain, and let P be a set of points (locations) on its surface. An important problem in Geographic Information Science (GIS) is computing the visibility index of a point p on P , that is, the number of points in P that are visible from p. The total visibility-index problem asks for computing the visibility index of every point in P . Most applications of this problem involve 2-dime...
متن کاملLiquid crystal Janus emulsion droplets: preparation, tumbling, and swimming.
This study introduces liquid crystal (LC) Janus droplets. We describe a process for the preparation of these droplets, which consist of nematic LC and polymer compartments. The process employs solvent-induced phase separation in emulsion droplets generated by microfluidics. The droplet morphology was systematically investigated and demonstrated to be sensitive to the surfactant concentration in...
